2 point v/s 3 point stance

Postby fogle on Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:53 pm

In the past we have debated using 2 or 3 point stance. We always end up using 3 point, even though we are primarily a spread team. The major reason is: in our 2 point stance, we never seem to "get off the ball" quick enough. We have tried to use 2 point on certain plays, but i think that leads to tendencies that a good Def Coor will take advantage of. Do any of you guys have any "tips or coaching points" that i could use to more successfully implement the 2 point stance???

2pt vs. 3pt.

Postby ncolcoach on Thu Jul 24, 2008 5:36 pm

We are also a spread team and I have shuffled back and forth with this a whole lot. I took the 2 pt. out of my line play because we were not getting a lot of push (we also run some 2 back stuff and power, belly, iso, trap out of the gun). I have found though, with my guys at least, they almost have to keep their butts up a little. I have watched too many, especially young high school guys, sit back in their heels and sink their butt like an NFL LT on 3rd and 15. When I teach the two point, it is my three point without their hand on the ground. That gives them a little forward lean, and keeps them from having what i call a kick stand, where they lose that toe to instep relationship. Guys feel like they have to have that leg kicked way far back to generate power, but really I feel like it wastes time. I would rather have my toes be more even than more offset. Hope this helps.

We are a spread team and our tackles are in a two point and our gaurds are in a three point. In our spread we only pull tackles and I feel from and up stance it make them much faster. Also with pass protection and alignment it helps us out a great deal.

I have debated this subject as well. My thinking on it is what is it you need your boys to do?

For us being a team modeled after Texas Tech with 3ft splits at the minimum we need are guys to cover a large area. I have found that it is easier for them to move from side to side from a 2 point then 3 point. Of course this is to benefit pass blocking more then run blocking. That being said we do move down into a 3 point stance when we are using are under package (which means the Qb is under center).

When it comes to tipping of the Def Coordinator you simply have to self scout a little more to make sure it isn't to obvious. So for us we make sure to incorporate are passing game when we are in under so we just don't use those particular formations for running the ball. I know it is extra work as a coach but in my mind I have to do it in order to put our kids in the best position to win.

I am still struggling at this point with deciding how to do it. As said before, my guys tend to get too high in a 2 point. What I am probably going to do is have the guards in a three point regardless and signal it in up or down for tackles. I will mix it up so as not to give an opposing DC an opportunity to get a good tendency on us. ITs probably something I will change my mind and make it up again time and time again.

We played with the two point stance idea. The issue is we are not a spread team. I feel we as offensive line coaches spend a huge amount of time getting our players to play with low hips and speed. Giving them a two point stance option takes away any power inside run game. Of course we are not a base spread team and attempt to run the ball more then pass.

I used a two point stance this year for the first time. We were very successful with with our zone blocking. Pass pro and slide protecton were unbelievable.

We run a pro-style offense...pretty balanced between the pass and the run. If we had the recievers for it we would run a spread offense. At this point it looks like we will be running mostly 1-2 TE sets and even some wing stuff. I am thinking that we might use the 2pt stance in 3rd and long situations...obvious passing situations basically. Is this a crazy idea? I'm a young varisty coach, trying to develop my style..thanks guys

This is my thing about 2 vs 3 point. I teach my guys to know the down and distance because you will use certain plays in each one. For example: if it's 1st down and we're not in a 2 minute situation we're down regardless. If it's 2nd and 8 plus, then they'll get in their 2 point stances. 3rd and 5 plus my guys will use a 2 pt. stance. I also have them 2 pt out of counters and draws every now and then to try and mix things up so the defense doesn't key in on certain situations.

STANCE:

We believe it must be 3 point. Explosive and balanced to enable the blocker to move in four (4) directions with vertical leverage. Eyes are up (strain thru the eyebrows).

2 point is fine for OT vs, wide edge rushers (outside foot more staggered).
