DEFENSIVE LINE TECHNIQUES (USED IN 4-3 & 4-2-5 DEFENSES):

PRIORITY = LINE UP TIGHT TO BALL. ATTACK! KNOCK BLOCKER BACK – STAND HIM UP!. CREATE A NEW L.O.S. – DOMINATE THE BLOCKER. GET OFF ON BALL MOVEMENT!

I. DEFENSIVE TACKLES:

ONE TECHNIQUE: ALIGN WITH OUTSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF THE OG. (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH OUTSIDE FOOT READING OG – STAB HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS): A GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF OG: Squeeze OG over to B gap. Stay square and keep inside arm free. Control A gap and look for cutback.
B. Vs. BLOCK BY CENTER: OG pulls inside - dip inside shoulder and attack Center on your angle. If his head is in front of you, widen him and work to cross face. If his head is behind you, fold behind him.
C. Vs. TRAP: OG releases outside - flash inside for trapper. Attack trapping OG – take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath OG.

THREE TECHNIQUE: ALIGN WITH INSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF THE OG. (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH INSIDE FOOT READING OG – STAB WITH HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS). B GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. REACH BLOCK OF OG: Knock OG back and keep his head inside as you lock out outside arm. Stay square and find the ball.
B. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF OT: OG pulls outside - dip outside shoulder and attack OT on your angle. If OT’s head is in front of you widen and work to cross face. If OT’s head is behind you, fold behind him.
C. Vs. TRAP: OG releases inside - same as 1 Technique (above).

NOTE: DT’S HAVE INSIDE PASS RUSH LANES.

II. DEFENSIVE ENDS:

FIVE TECHNIQUE: ALIGN WITH INSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF OT (SPLIT END SIDE PLAY “WIDE 5” – 2 FEET OUTS. OT – ATTACK HIP OF OT ON SNAP). NOTE: IF CONFRONTED WITH A TE – PLAY EXACTLY AS 3 TECHNIQUE ABOVE FROM A “NORMAL 5” ). C GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. TURNOUT BLOCK OF OT: - Attack hip of OT maintaining proper leverage. Keep outside leg and arm free. Bend to near back. Maintain outside leverage and bend to football.
B. OT BLOCKS DOWN INSIDE: Point toe to OT, locating near back, (if near back goes away, locate ANY OL coming inside out). Bend inside and treat kickout by near back and OL the same. Take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath kickout. Other possibilities when OT blocks inside = option, or play away.
C. OT PULLS INSIDE: Stay in OT’s hip pocket and run to football.

SEVEN TECHNIQUE: ALIGN WITH OUTSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF OT. (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH OUTSIDE FOOT READING TE – STAB WITH HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS). C GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF TE: Squeeze TE over to D gap. Stay square and keep inside arm free. Control C gap and locate ball.
B. Vs. TURNOUT BLOCK OF OT: TE blocks out - dip inside shoulder and attack hip of OT. maintaining proper leverage. Keep outside leg and arm free. Bend to near back. Maintain outside leverage and bend to football.
C. Vs. TRAP (OR KICKOUT – BY ANY INSIDE BLOCKER): TE blocks out and OT blocks inside – point toe to OT, locating near back (if near back goes away, locate ANY OL coming inside out). Bend inside and treat kickout by near back and OL the same. Take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath kickout.

NINE TECHNIQUE (MOST OFTEN PLAYED BY OLB): ALIGN WITH INSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF TE. (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH INSIDE FOOT READING TE – STAB WITH HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS). D GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. REACH BLOCK OF TE: Knock TE back and keep his head inside you as you lock out outside arm. Control D gap.
B. Vs. TURNOUT BLOCK OF TE: Attack TE maintaining proper leverage. Keep outside leg and arm free. Bend to near back. Maintain outside leverage and bend to football..
C. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF TE: Flatten TE locating near back (if near back goes away, locate ANY OL coming inside out). From this point on – whether we spill or contain will depend on defense called!!!

NOTE: DE’S HAVE OUTSIDE (CONTAIN) PASS RUSH LANES.
